Learning to code
The primary point of learning to code is, as you say, a machine automation skill.
The intangible virtues include logical (or at least structured) thought.
Also, the ecstatic rush of me being 10 years old in 1971 and writing:

Killing Hitler is the classic. There must be countless millions of time travellers who obsess about Killing Hitler — and every one of those obsessive time-travellers *must be stopped*.
Don't get me started on people who try to save JFK's hairdo from getting restyled in Dallas.
