In 1978 Starr Roxanne Hiltz, a sociologist at Upsala CollegeOffsite Link, East Orange, New Jersey, and her husband, Murray Turoff, a professor of computer science, showed how "computer-mediated communication" could develop social networking in their book The Network Nation: Human Communication via Computer.
