Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832), comte de Chanteloup, was a distinguished French chemist, physician, agronomist, industrialist, statesman, educator and philanthropist.

His multifaceted career unfolded during one of the most brilliant periods in French science.

Chaptalization, the process of using sugar to increase alcohol content in wine, is named after him.
