Portable envy is envy (nonfiction) which has been removed from an individual, and stored for transportation and later experience.
Circuit boards
Early versions of portable envy exploited vulnerable components on circuit boards.
Manufacturers initially substituted cheaper components to save money during the Capacitor plague (nonfiction) years.
Subsequently, pirate manufacturers have released knock-off circuit boards with built-in portable envy features.
Security problem in prisons
Portable envy devices are popular black-market items in many prisons, despite efforts by get-tough wardens (and, in some prisons, self-regulating prisoners) to forbid ownership or use of portable envy.
